Welcome to Bodhgaya.jp
Bodhgaya, located in the eastern part of India, in the state of Bihar-, is the most supreme and sacred pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Siddhartha Gautama, before becoming the Buddha, practiced austerities for over six years on the banks of river Neranjana which flows in this holy city of Bodhgaya. It is the holy site where Gautama Buddha is said to have attained Enlightenment. Bodhgaya is religiously significant not only for Buddhists but also for Hindus as Lord Buddha is considered to be the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Mahabodhi Temple Complex
Mahabodhi Temple Complex is located in the heart of the city. The original temple structure was built in the 3rd century B.C. during the regime of Emperor Asoka, when he himself made a pilgrimage to this site. However, during the late Gupta period, the temple was reconstructed and was built entirely out of bricks covered with stucco. It is highly impressive that the main temple structure still survives despite its constituent components being of less durability. The temple is an outstanding example of early brick architecture in India and is regarded as UNESCO World Heritage site. Tourists from throughout the world pay a visit to this magnificent site for spiritual experience.

Bodhi Tree
To the west of the main temple, stands the most sacred Bodhi Tree. It is under this Tree that Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, meditated until he attained the state of Nirvana or Enlightenment. The present Bodhi Tree is supposedly fifth descendant of the original tree. The exact spot where the Buddha sat while attaining enlightenment is traditionally called as Budlaterdha`s Vajrasana or Diamond Throne.

Lord Buddha spent first week post enlightenment by continuing meditating under the Bodhi tree. The second week was spent in Animeshlochan Chaitya or the prayer hall which is located to the north of the central path. In the third week, Lord Buddha walked 18 paces back and forth in an area named as Ratnachakrama or the Jeweled Ambulatory which lies to the north direction of the main temple. Ratnaghar Chaitya is a spot where Lord Buddha spent his fourth week and in the fifth week, He meditated while answering all the queries of the Brahmins. Sixth week was spent near the Lotus Pond and seventh week under the Rajyatana Tree before setting off for Sarnath near Varanasi.
